#our stories Mountaineering Association “Cincar” Livno – a new story on old foundations

Mountaineering Association “Cincar” Livno is an association with a great tradition in our community. It was founded on April 23, 1929 as a branch of the Croatian Mountaineering Association from Zagreb, with interruptions in work that lasted from 1941-1982. The break in work during the war began in 1991 and lasted until March 1998. Since then, the Association has been working on nurturing and expanding mountaineering activities in the Livno area.

The mission of the Mountaineering Association “Cincar” is to offer attractive sports facilities in nature, to all nature lovers, and especially to young population, to change the attitude towards preserving the environment and attitude towards preserving their own health, and to nurture and develop psychophysical and physical abilities and promote the natural beauties of Livno and the Livno region.

The Association owns the mountain lodge “Kruzi” with all the small and large inventory. It was built in 2008 and located on Krug planina-Cincar (1265 m above sea level), the site of Rade’s basket. The home is owned by the Association, and was built as a two-story house with kitchen, large dining room, living room, two large bedrooms with 20 beds and an attic with 9 beds.

As the participation of the younger population in activities has weakened in the last few years, the Association had to take much-needed measures, according to MA Cincar. With the change of the management of the Association, the work on increasing and rejuvenating the membership, and the inclusion of a larger number of young and active members in the management bodies of the Association, intensified. The main goal of the new leadership is to continuously work on strengthening mountaineering activities, organizing trips to local and mountain peaks throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region, to take care of the Association’s property, especially the Mountain Lodge and continuously work on increasing the number of members.

In order to achieve the set goals, the new management of the Association organized several activities during July and August: a trip to Čvrsnica, a two-day trip to Lelija and Zelengora, participated in the Days of Herceg-Bosna mountaineers in Bogodol, a tour of the ridge and all peaks of Kamešnica, a trip to Kurtegić dolac on Kamešnica and a trip to Troglav.

In order to achieve the goals of the Association, the project “Procurement and presentation of equipment for more demanding trips” was designed and implemented, through which equipment for demanding trips was procured to motivate and involve more people from the community in mountaineering activities. The total value of the project is 10,062.79 BAM, of which the City of Livno and the Association contributed financially in the amount of 2,525.41 BAM, sub-grant funds amounted to 6,753.00 BAM and volunteer contribution in the amount of 784.38 BAM.

Equipment such as helmets, seat belts, ropes, crampons, snowshoes, etc., are needed for personal insurance on more demanding hiking trips, and this type of trip is becoming more common, especially to the younger population. For this reason, the project envisages that the Association procures this type of equipment so that it is available for rent to members of the Association, but also to all in the local community who are already engaged in this activity and all who are interested and want to try it.

In addition to the procurement of equipment, promotional material, flags, flags and T-shirts were made, which will be used by the Association for promotion, as well as for the presentation of purchased equipment and organization of training on the use of equipment. Also, the premises of MA “Cincar” have been renovated with safe storage of equipment, but also easier keeping of records of renting, use and maintenance of equipment.

The equipment was presented at the traditional Cincar Days event, which was held at the end of September 2021, and which was attended by more than 250 mountaineers and nature lovers from the local community as well as from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.

Members of MA Cincar from Livno tested the purchased mountaineering and alpinist equipment for the first time by climbing the ferrata on the Omis Dinara, and after climbing the ferrata and resting at the Fortica Fortress, they climbed the highest peak of the Omis Dinara – Kula at 864 m above sea level.

By strengthening the capacity of civil society organizations and involving community actors in solving local problems, we encourage joint work on local development and promote positive examples of social engagement in communities.

The project “Procurement and presentation of equipment for more demanding trips” of the Mountaineering Association “Cincar” from Livno was realized within the project “Local Works – Together for local development” implemented by the Center for Civic Cooperation from Livno and the Association of Citizens “Grahovo” from Bosansko Grahovo with the support of the United States Agency for International Development – USAID.
