Workshop on the protection of ichthyofauna in the Buna River held in Mostar

As part of the workshop, the Fly Fishing Section helped design the steps for establishing a coordinating body with the aim of preserving the Buna River and realizing the project.

The workshop as part of the project “Inverterization of ichthyofauna in the Buna River” was held in Mostar with the Fly Fishing Section of the Sports Fishermen’s Association (USR) “Neretva 1933” Mostar, and organized by the Youth Club (OK) Novi Val, with the aim of protecting the ichthyofauna in BiH. A special emphasis of protection is placed on the species of soft-lipped trout (Salmothymus obtusirostris oxyrhynchus), which is found in the Buna river and is marked as a critically endangered species on the IUCN red list, announced from OK Novi Val.

As part of the workshop, the Fly Fishing Section helped design the steps for establishing a coordinating body with the aim of preserving the Buna River and realizing the project. They also presented a fly fishing school that will focus on involving the youngest in this type of sport, as well as the importance of joint cooperation in the future. An online meeting was also held with section member Alija Topuz, who shared his experiences from Canada.

The Dinarica Association joined the workshop and gave full support to the gathering as well as the project goals. The project is part of a multi-year campaign to protect the rivers of Southeast Europe. The campaign was launched by one of the world’s most important organizations for nature protection, The Nature Conservancy (TNC), in cooperation with local partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia.

By working together, they want to highlight and protect the unique river resources of our region, the importance of which transcends the borders of individual countries. By protecting them, new development opportunities are created and long-term benefits for people and nature are ensured.
