ABB is setting new standards in robotics with the use of artificial intelligence

ABB is a global corporation that operates in the field of  electrification and automation  and enables a more sustainable future with efficient use of resources. It is a technological leader in power, robotics and actuator products, industrial automation, as well as networks and software. ABB’s positioning in the robotics and AI market is underpinned by its continued investment in research and development. The International Federation of Robotics states that  the robotics industry is experiencing steady growth , with expectations that the market value of artificial intelligence in robotics will increase to multi-billion dollars in the coming years, so this is a topic that definitely needs attention.

In 2024, ABB identifies  three key areas of development  that will have a significant impact on industrial production, sectors outside it and access to education and the workforce.

1. Autonomy of robotics with AI

Modern robots are no longer limited to repeating preprogrammed tasks.  Thanks to the integration of AI, ABB robots can now perform complex operations with greater precision and flexibility.  Technology such as  Visual SLAM  allows robots to create detailed maps of their environments and navigate through them independently, opening up new possibilities for the application of robotics in dynamic and unpredictable conditions. What does this mean for us? We won’t have to do boring or life-threatening jobs, nor will we have to supervise robots while they do them.

2. Application of robotics in new sectors

Traditionally, they were used mainly in manufacturing, but robots are now finding their place in other industries thanks to advances in AI. ABB is at the forefront of research into  how robots can contribute to sectors such as healthcare, construction and retail . In construction, for example, AI-equipped robots can improve safety, efficiency and sustainability by taking over tasks like bricklaying and 3D printing.

3. Initiating educational reform with AI and robotics

ABB is also exploring how advances in robotics and AI can transform access to workforce education and training. With AI technologies making it easier to program and control robots,  more and more people can effectively use these tools, closing the skills gap and opening up new  employment opportunities. This approach promises not only to increase the availability of robotics education, but also to  improve the workforce’s ability to adapt to  a labor market moving toward the skills and jobs of the future .

From mobile and collaborative robots, to creating new robotics applications in new sectors and creating new opportunities for people to learn and develop, these new frontiers for artificial intelligence are reshaping the future of industrial robotics.”

By integrating advanced AI, ABB not only increases efficiency and safety in the workplace, but also enables the expansion of the use of robotics into new sectors, paving the way for innovations that will shape future generations. However, opinions are divided on this topic.
