Student from Sarajevo bought 180 New Year’s gifts for the Vladimir Nazor Center children out of her pocket money

Many find their fulfillment in humanitarian work and helping others, and among them is Hana Omeragić, a student of psychology and pedagogy from Sarajevo, who found her happiness in the smiles of children for whom she prepared New Year’s gifts.

The 24-year-old student has been involved in humanitarian work for some time, and her activities, due to her great love for children, are most often related to them.

Hana has always enjoyed working and playing with children, so she decided to gift children from the Center for Education and Rehabilitation “Vladimir Nazor” Sarajevo for the New Year holidays. She collected funds for gifts mainly from her pocket money, but also from her own earnings, which she earns from occasional student work. “I have always found happiness in playing and working with children, and I have been involved in humanitarian work for a long time. Some of the happiest childhood memories are related to the New Year’s holidays, so I decided to give someone at least a piece of happiness that I had as a girl, give children joy, memories and most importantly – sweets,” she said.

She points out that the idea arose even before the pandemic, but due to the situation we have been in for the past almost two years, she has managed to realize her plans now.

“The money invested in fulfilling my desire to bring joy to the children of Vladimir Nazor Center I saved for almost a year and imagined what it would all look like, but I had no idea that I would actually fill the house with toys that were ultimately packed in 180 gift packages,” she added.

After her humanitarian action, Hana received a letter from the Vladimir Nazor Center

Humanitarian actions are almost always supported by individuals, and the idea of the individual is often recognized by those closest to him_her, who are involved in various ways and want to be part of positive stories. Omeragić points out that both her friends and family wanted to participate and help realize her idea.

“My friends were not surprised when they found out about this idea, because everyone knows me as a person who enjoys playing and working with children. Many wanted to participate and help with making the gifts, but unfortunately that was not possible. My mother and brother were the ones who stacked, sorted, packed and tied bows with me at night, and helped me to fulfill my wish,” she pointed out.

Hana points out that her project can be an example that happiness requires nothing more than a little effort and a lot of love. She emphasizes that we can all take small steps and thus build a better world.

“If someone sees me as a positive example because of this and takes that small step as a result, I will be proud, but the primary goal was never to talk about me, but to give joy to the children from the Vladimir Nazor Center. The first step is certainly to think of and take care of neglected groups in society, but what we should strive for is real inclusion in society”, she added.
