The struggle against violence against women, especially sexual violence, has been central to the feminist fight against patriarchal oppression for decades.
For many years, feminists from the region have been actively engaged against various forms of violence against women: from struggling to make the existence of violence against women publicly visible, through struggles to make violence socially unacceptable, to providing solidarity and any other support to women survivors of violence. In the patriarchal and misogynistic societies in which we live, this struggle has never been easy and simple, especially when it comes to sexual violence. It required courage, ingenuity and perseverance. Feminists were often marginalized and excommunicated. Nonetheless, looking from the distance of the last 40 years, feminists have managed to achieve a lot. And we will talk about this at the conference. In the last few years, interventions in public space have increased. Public campaigns are used to make women’s solidarity in the struggle against sexual violence against women as visible as possible and thus raise the level of public awareness of the seriousness and prevalence of this social problem.
These campaigns have also opened new social channels through which women and girls can share their experiences and find support and understanding. This conference attempts to point to the continuity of the feminist struggles against violence against women, specifically the struggles against sexual violence. By opening the space for meetings and exchange of experiences of current and earlier feminist initiatives, we want to explore how feminist initiatives can support each other and what can we learn from each other? What are the next steps and how to use the existing momentum for further work and social change?
Join us for an online regional conference where we would like to encourage discussion on women’s solidarity and open space for the exchanges of experiences and potential regional cooperation.
