The Federal Minister of Environment and Tourism Nasiha Pozder and the Mayor of Konjic Osman Ćatić signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a new protected area “Prenj” in Tisovica near the “Divova kuća” bivouac, in the area of the Prenj mountain.
This document shows the common points and interests of the Federation of BiH and the City of Konjic in terms of fulfilling the goals of the Federal Environmental Strategy and strategic documents of the City of Konjic, which will contribute to the increase of the protected territory in the Federation of BiH as well as the protection of valuable natural areas in our country.
The general goal is to create an expert basis and explanation for the establishment of the protected area “Prenj” in the area of the town of Konjic. Both parties agree and undertake that each of them will provide technical, professional and financial support in order to achieve the main goal, which is the adoption of the Law on the Proclamation of the Prenj Protected Area.
“Prenj is a magnificent mountain, its protection and modern management is of priority importance for the Federation and the entire country. In accordance with international conventions, Bosnia and Herzegovina has an obligation to increase the percentage of protected areas, and this is where the Prenj mountain area is an excellent opportunity, but also an obligation to act for future generations. This area has great potential for tourism and I am glad that we found a real partner in the City of Konjic who understands our efforts and wants to establish a protected area in Prenje on its territory. The next step will be the signing of the contract with our partners in UNDP, with whom we will work on this big and important task, for which the ministry and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina have allocated 250,000 KM in the budget this year ,” said Minister Pozder.
Osman Ćatić, the mayor of Konjic, also expressed his satisfaction that the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism recognized Prenj as an important natural pearl that should be protected, as well as the good cooperation with Minister Pozder.
“Konjic is recognizable for its natural treasures, from Neretva, Rakitnica canyon, Visočica, Bitovnja, Zec mountain and other beauties, and Prenj has always been a special mountain for us, our emblem. Our common goal is to pass the Law on the Proclamation of the Prenj Protected Area, which will be a great pledge for our city and future generations, and I am glad that we have taken this important step towards that goal ,” said Ćatić.
The signing of the Memorandum took place as part of the commemoration of the 642nd anniversary of the first mention of Konjic in written documents, Konjic City Day.
