“Bless Waste” project – Banja Luka with less waste

The Center for Environment, in cooperation with the City Administration of Banja Luka, Čistoća a.d. and the Petrićevac Local Community, with the support of the British Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is implementing a project aimed at improving the waste management system in the city of Banja Luka.

For the selected 40 households in the settlement of Petrićevac, selective waste collection that can be recycled will be organized. Households will receive a bin for recyclable waste (paper, cardboard, plastic, glass…), which will be collected by Čistoća workers once a week, with regular collection of other non-recyclable waste. Citizens will also receive a composter in which they will be able to put biological waste from the kitchen and garden (remains of fruits, vegetables, leaves, branches). With proper use of composters, these residues will provide quality humus for gardens, flower beds… Also, selected households will receive all the necessary instructions, as well as other materials that will allow them to generate less waste in everyday life. Households will be obliged to measure once a week, during the duration of the project, according to the instructions, on the scales that will be provided, the mass of waste that they generate, which cannot be recycled.

The Center for the Environment will also organize workshops where citizens of Petrićevac, as well as other neighborhoods, will be able to get practical advice, but also skills, in order to reduce waste generation and live a more sustainable life.

The mentioned activities are planned to start in November and to last until the end of March 2022. The goal is to show at the pilot community in the settlement of Petrićevac that selective waste collection is possible, and that with small changes we can achieve big steps towards more sustainable waste management. Selective waste collection and recycling reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and environment, while conserving natural resources.

With the realization of this project, the settlement of Petrićevac would be recognized as one of the first settlements in Banja Luka to have selective waste collection, which would contribute to the image of the settlement as pleasant to live in, where the environment is taken into account. Also, we would take a step forward towards solving the problem of waste, for the sake of our environment and our children.

We invite citizens from Zora Kovačević and Branislava Nušića streets to join this project and make Petrićevac and Banja Luka a better and more beautiful place to live. Citizens can apply until November 8.
