The 29th Conference (General Assembly) of member countries of the International Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) began its work in The Hague on November 25. The plenary session of the conference will last until November 29.
At the beginning of the session, a ceremony was held during which the ambassador of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Netherlands and permanent representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the OPCW, Almir Šahović, officially took over the chairmanship of this large global multilateral gathering, which includes 193 countries.
Ambassador Šahović was elected to the position of chairman of the OPCW General Assembly on the proposal of the Group of Eastern and Central European States, for a term of one year, that is, until the next General Assembly, which should be held in November 2025.
In his address at the Conference, Ambassador Šahović thanked for the trust shown, especially in this very delicate geopolitical moment that the world is going through. He underlined that his election represents a great recognition of the active foreign policy and the constructive role played by Bosnia and Herzegovina in international relations.
By the way, the OPCW General Assembly is one of the largest multilateral meetings in the world (more than 500 participants) after the UN General Assembly and represents the largest multilateral meeting ever chaired by Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Presiding over the General Assembly of the OPCW represents an exceptional opportunity for additional promotion of Bosnia and Herzegovina on the international level, as a reliable and constructive partner capable of contributing to the resolution of very complex issues on the world stage.
