Waste recycling facility opened in Bihać

Yesterday, the public company “Komrad” Bihać opened a recycling yard for the selection of useful waste. In the newly built facility, the collected paper, glass and plastic will be sorted, i.e., prepared for further processing.

We are proud of this project, because this is actually a takeover of the acquis and good practices of the European Union. It seems to me that we are taking a step forward in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and very soon we will all simply have to deal with the collected waste in this way,” said the director of company, Mehura Selimović.

Funds for the implementation have been procured successively since the beginning of the project in 2013, with the help of partners.

By collecting eco-fees, we have received 90 thousand BAM for the construction of the facility from the City of Bihać and the Government of Una-Sana Canton, then 50 thousand BAM from the Federal Fund for Environmental Protection to which we provided a waste sorting line, with excellent cooperation with probably the most important partner EKOPAK“, added Selimović.

EKOPAK is the first authorized operator of the packaging management and packaging waste management system in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The company cooperates with a dozen public utility companies on the territory of the Federation, and Bihać’s “Komrad” has been in the lead in that cooperation for almost eight years.

About fifty percent of the total amount of collected packaging waste in cooperation with the federal utility companies is delivered to us from the Public Company “Komrad” from Bihać. That speaks enough about the level to which this company has reached in a period of eight years“, said the director of EKOPAK, Amela Hrbat.

Last year, Komrad Bihać collected more than 250 thousand tons of packaging waste, and after these and upcoming investments, there is a tendency of doubling that amount.

Satisfaction with the implemented project and modernization of the Bihać utility company was emphasized by the Mayor of Bihać Šuhret Fazlić and the Minister of Construction, Urban Planning and Environmental Protection of the Una-Sana Canton Adnan Alagić, emphasizing its ecological importance for the Canton which promotes its natural and tourist values and potentials.
