USR ‘Neretva 1933’ calls for urgent protection of the fish stock: HPP on the Neretva caused incalculable damage to native soft-mouth trout

The sports fishermen’s association “Neretva 1933” issued a press release in which it appeals to all relevant institutions to immediately take urgent steps to prevent further fluctuations in the water level of the Neretva River and minimize harmful consequences for the fish stock.

As they point out, they are speaking on the occasion of the “catastrophic event that has happened for the second time in the last 48 hours at HPP Mostar”, stating that the sudden drop in flow from the mentioned hydroaccumulation resulted in a dramatic drop in the water level of the Neretva River, and thus serious consequences for the native soft-mouth trout. which is currently in the spawning phase, as well as other types of fish.

“An extremely large number of fish remained exposed in coastal areas, as well as spawning grounds that were completely destroyed, which represents an unprecedented threat to the survival of the soft-mouth trout, which is marked as endangered on the IUCN list,” the Association points out.

The President of the Board of Directors of the Association of Sports Anglers “Neretva 1933” Nedžad Selimotić pointed out that thanks to the quick and selfless reaction of the members of the Association and the fishkeeping service, some of the fish were saved at the last moment, but that the damage that had already occurred was incalculable.

“We want to appeal to all relevant institutions to immediately take urgent steps in order to prevent further water level oscillations and minimize harmful consequences for the fish stock. At the moment when spawning is in full swing, it is absolutely necessary to adjust the flow of hydroelectric power plants on the Neretva River in order to preserve biodiversity and the indigenous fish population”, the Association says, stating that they expect a quick and effective reaction to prevent further damage to the Neretva River and its unique fish population. .
