The Mayor of Lopar signed an initiative against lithium exploitation at Majevica

The signing of the citizens’ initiative for the adoption of the Decision on a moratorium on the granting of concessions for geological research and for the exploitation of mineral raw materials, ores and other resources in the area of ​​Mount Majevica has begun in Lopare until the completion of the area protection procedure in accordance with the Law on Nature Protection of the Republic of Srpska and the adoption of the Document on the Policy for Granting Concessions in accordance with the Law on Concessions of the Republic of Srpska.

– I have come to support this initiative, because it reflects the position of the vast majority of citizens living in our municipality, and this represents another attempt at an institutional fight against the lithium mine project on Majevica and an attempt to open the eyes of those who make decisions. I call on all citizens of the municipalities of Lopare and Ugljevik and the cities of Bijeljina and Zvornik to contribute by signing the petition to stopping this very harmful project for Majevica, Semberija and the wider region – said Rado Savić, Mayor of Lopare, after signing the aforementioned initiative.

At the points in four local communities, the partner environmental associations Čuvari Majevice from Lopar, Eko put from Bijeljina, Mountaineering and Environmental Association Ľukar from Zvornik and Ľokola BB from Ugljevik ensured the presence of a sufficient number of volunteers for the stands, in addition to their members, who will collect signatures.

– The citizens of Lopar, Bijeljina, Ugljevik and Zvornik are launching a Citizens’ Initiative with the aim of protecting Mount Majevica as a nature park and preventing geological research and extraction of mineral raw materials, including lithium – says a statement from the Ecological Association Eko put.

The petition signing period lasts 30 days, from December 21, 2024 to January 19, 2025, at signing points in Lopare, Bijeljina, Ugljevik and Zvornik.
