Teachers as leaders in the community: Healthy lifestyle habits through education and joint action

In Kreševo, attendee Learn, Think and Act! of training for teaching and professional staff of secondary schools,  Tina Tomičić , launched an initiative that promoted a healthy life and togetherness in the local community. The initiative called  “Sit up straight and eat healthy”  started with a simple but powerful idea: encourage young people to adopt healthier lifestyle habits through education, physical activity and joint action.

Numerous meetings and workshops were organized as part of the initiative. In March, students attended a nutritionist’s lecture on the importance of a healthy diet, after which they prepared healthy meals in the kitchen. These activities allowed young people to practically apply what they learned, while developing their culinary skills.

During the sports workshops, under the guidance of the professor of physical education and health, young people engaged in motor exercises, learning the rules of volleyball and participating in various sports games. Such activities not only promoted physical health but also strengthened the sense of community and team spirit among the participants.

Particularly significant were the meetings where the participants, including children with developmental disabilities, learned about the importance of healthy sugars and sweeteners and prepared healthy desserts themselves. The activities additionally connected the participants through joint work and enjoyment of prepared food.

As the crown of all activities, a hiking trip to Pogorelica was organized. Despite the rain, the participants enjoyed nature, socializing and a healthy meal, which further strengthened the acquired healthy habits and common spirit.

The initiative “Sit straight and eat healthy” gave a great experience to all participants. Young people have become more physically active, they have acquired healthier eating habits, and many of them have joined the local mountaineering society. Also, the activities significantly contributed to the development of social skills and a sense of community among young people, which had a positive effect on their mental health.

“Implementation of the project “Sit straight and eat healthy” was an extremely useful and inspiring experience. In the period from March to the end of June, children and young people aged 12 to 19 participated in various workshops that promoted healthy eating and physical activity. A special contribution to the project was made by our guests, children with developmental disabilities, who enriched the workshops with their participation. This initiative not only improved young people’s knowledge about a healthy lifestyle, but also created a sense of community and awareness of inclusion among the participants,” said Tina Tomičić.

This initiative was implemented in partnership with the Association of Young Sportsmen Kreševo with the mentoring and financial support of the Institute for Youth Development KULT.
