Signed joint statement of support for the opening of negotiations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union: Statement for the future of this country and regional support for the opening of negotiations

The Peace Building Network Association organized in Sarajevo a gathering of representatives of civil society organizations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Igman Initiative from surrounding countries, where our joint declaration of support for the opening of negotiations between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union for accession to the European Union was signed.

After the recommendation of the European Commission to the European Council that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) start negotiations with the European Union (EU), civil society organizations (CSOs) from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia provide full support for the initiation of negotiations and the accession of BiH to the European Union.

state, because we also need a little optimism from the European Union with the desire that Bosnia and Herzegovina and its politicians show a far greater degree of responsibility towards the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina and towards the European Union, which offers us a new chance to become part of that great European family in the foreseeable future. We need European standards, the rule of law, respect for human rights, constitutional patriotism, the fight against corruption and organized crime, which we need for ourselves, not for the European Union. With the help of the European Union, we will be more efficient and fulfill all conditions, not under pressure, but with the really responsible behavior of our politicians”, said Vehid Šehić, a member of the Igman initiative from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As Šehić emphasized, this statement is of great importance for the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“This statement is a statement for the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and only we in Bosnia and Herzegovina need to go back to the past and face everything that happened and that hinders the political stabilization of this country,” added Šehić.

Aleksandar Popov, representative of the Igman Initiative for Serbia, emphasized the importance of this regional initiative.

“It is important to point out that this is a regional initiative of a civil society organization, not only an organization from Bosnia and Herzegovina, an organization from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia and Serbia. Throughout its work, the Igman Initiative worked to restore understanding and trust between our peoples,” said Popov.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s membership in the European Union is a great contribution to regional stability and cooperation between countries that share common history, languages, problems and successes due to similar socio-political and geo-political and ethnic specificities. The membership of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also of all the countries of the region in the EU, guarantees the maintenance of lasting peace and the development of democratic standards and values.

The prospect of membership in the EU is an extremely strong incentive for the continuation of already started reforms in BiH and the initiator of the process that should enable the creation of an economic, legal, organizational and social structure and a society in which respect for human rights is guaranteed.

The Peace Building Network is a coalition that gathers more than 250 members, organizations and schools from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina, and which makes a comprehensive effort aimed at restoring the quality of social and economic life in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and works with the goal of building sustainable peace.

Since its establishment in 2000, the Igman initiative has dedicated its activities to the citizens’ desire for EU membership, actively participating in the creation of concrete legal solutions and constitutional changes for the promotion of European values through our constitutional and legal framework.
