On Saturday, the Lake Mostar cleanup will include participation from 100 divers and activists from 20 cities

The Mostar Diving Club is organizing the annual international environmental action to clean the shore and bed of the Mostar Lake called “LAKE 2022,” which will begin on Saturday, September 10 at noon. One hundred divers from 25 clubs, twenty towns, and four countries will participate.

The location of this beach is widely known to everyone, said Branislav Stojkic, chairman of the organizing committee for the environmental action, meaning that it is a spot that attracts a lot of tourists each year throughout the summer.

He also mentioned that the Mostar Diving Club has been bringing together a sizable number of divers and environmentalists for many years, who give their time to help organize this environmental endeavor.

– In addition to our friends from diving clubs, we expect the arrival of fishermen and rafters who, together with local divers from the club, will be a support on land. We can rightly say that this is one of the largest environmental actions in the region in which divers participate – Stojkić added.

He added that the action will clean an area of around 500 meters to a depth of 12 meters. Additionally, the beach itself will be restored, and 50 cubic meters of gravel will be added to the beach to make it acceptable for everyone who visits to enter the lake without difficulty. The access to the beach from the main road will also be renovated.

In addition to physical activities, a campaign to clean and mow the grass, organize the parking lot, and cut down on dry branches was started through city departments and public businesses.

Since more swimmers, campers with international registrations, and other visitors frequent this beach every year, according to Stojkic, the diving club decided to take on the project holder role and contribute to the area’s upkeep alongside the City of Mostar.

– There are 20 rafts and a lot of motor vehicles on Lake Mostar. Once a citizen threw in some garbage, which is why we will now make an effort to clean the beach for the benefit of all of us – believes Stojkic.

The Mostar Diving Club’s president, Franjo Soce, expressed the hope that this action will become a yearly tradition and grow in size.

– We want to jointly encourage citizens and influence their awareness with a small example in order to keep our environment as clean as possible – said Soce.

The Mostar Mayor, Mario Kordic, a diver who will take part in the event and a member of the Mostar Diving Club, stressed that this is a special chance for the City on the Neretva to send a beautiful message.

Kordic extended an invitation to participants to join the effort and work together to make the city cleaner. He claims that the Mo-Bus company will provide transportation for the participants, and that the Mostar Health Center and Mostar Police Department will support the action to ensure its safety.

Additionally, he mentioned that there would be other locations nearby Mostar where guests can go swimming in the future.

– There would also be security guards in the sense of lifeguards, during the season we would also provide emergency vehicles, as well as infrastructure, i.e., showers, toilets, changing rooms and similar. Our idea is that Bunica will be ready for next year, and with the Diving Club we will see that Lake Mostar goes in that direction – added Kordic.

In the end, Stojkic stated that the project to mark the beach on Lake Mostar had already begun, and he emphasized that the Diving Club would be delighted to maintain that installation if an agreement with the City of Mostar could be reached.
