What is the Children’s Parliament?
The Children’s Parliament of the City of Zenica, which operates within the Association “Our Children” Zenica, was established in 2011 within project Stronger Voice for Children. Parliament brings together children ready to work and fight so that all children in our city, but also in the future, have the rights guaranteed to them by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. “The world rests on children” ceases to be just a phrase because there is a Children’s Parliament in our city that confirms that statement. Some of the many activities that the parliament has worked on successfully are greater involvement of children and their rights and needs in local budget planning, marking Children’s Week and Children’s Day, creation of the Local Action Plan and Report on Children’s Rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and many other projects concerning children.
Why should you join the Children’s Parliament?
“I have never had the opportunity to get an informal education before, that is, to learn through play, and I think this is actually the beginning of love for parliament. After workshops I started researching. The main goal of the Children’s Parliament is to teach children about their rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child and how much these rights are respected. In addition to teaching about children’s rights, the parliament marks Children’s Day and Children’s Week every year, publishes its own magazine, organizes children’s meetings and panel discussions. During the research, I asked myself: “Did they ever tell me at school that children have their rights? That there is a Convention on the Rights of the Child? That Bosnia and Herzegovina signed the Convention? Unfortunately, I realized that no one taught us that in schools and that the Children’s Parliament is here to teach me these important things! September arrived, and I was looking forward to going to the organization and joining the parliament. At the first meeting, the leaders of the parliament and the organization greeted us with a warm smile on their faces, letting us know that we were welcome. As time went on, I realized that the Children’s Parliament had changed my view of the world. He gave me the opportunity to express my opinion and ideas, as well as all other members, he motivated us to fight and never give up. We have achieved a lot by working together.” – said Adna Agicevic, former member of the Children’s Parliament.
We haven’t convinced you yet?
In addition to non-formal education and the opportunity to express their opinions, our members have the opportunity to travel, meet others and be part of intercultural exchanges in the children’s village Pestalozzi, which has so far been visited by five generations of parliament members.
