Challenges and opportunities in the education of gifted children and young people

That there is a will to improve the education system and create better conditions for the development of talents, which is of key importance for the future of our social community, was also shown by the conference entitled “Discovering potential: Gifted children and youth”.

The international conference “Discovering the potential: Gifted children and young people”, organized by the JU Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education of the Canton of Sarajevo in partnership with
the Ministry of Education of the Canton of Sarajevo, the Ministry of Science, Higher
Education and Youth of the Canton of Sarajevo, the Institute for Youth Development KULT , BH Telecom and Unipromet dd Sarajevo gathered more than 150 experts, educators, psychologists, pedagogues, parents and other interested parties, with the aim of exchanging experiences and ideas on the topic of recognition, support and development of gifted children and young people.

In the introductory part of the conference, those gathered had the opportunity to hear introductory speeches by experts in the field of education and science, among whom were representatives of the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Youth of Sarajevo Canton. It was emphasized how important it is for the education system, as well as the wider community, to recognize the potential of gifted children and young people and provide them with adequate support and development.

“The Institute for Youth Development KULT remains determined to be an interlocutor and partner in all matters concerning young people, including such initiatives aimed at identifying and supporting young people. I believe that with joint efforts we can create conditions in which young people will receive the necessary resources and support for the development of their potential in Bosnia and Herzegovina” , stated Ajka Rovčanin, executive director of the Institute for Youth Development KULT.

One of the most important parts of the conference were the workshops, through which participants had the opportunity to share experiences and develop concrete proposals for further improvement of support for gifted children.

” Gifted children and young people require our continuous and dedicated work, adaptation and creativity. Long-term experience in working with young people has shown me that innovative approaches and openness are key to the development of their talents ,” said Senada Salihović, director of the Institute for the Development of Pre-University Education of Sarajevo Canton.

The workshop that brought together gifted primary and secondary school students from the area of Sarajevo Canton also produced very useful results. The aim of the workshop was to map the specific needs of gifted children and explore new educational approaches and evaluation methods that will enable their optimal development.

“The potentials of gifted children and young people must not remain unrecognized, because any talent that does not receive the necessary attention and support misses the opportunity to shape a better future and support the development of society. Through the joint efforts of formal and informal education and innovative approaches, we can create an environment that not only recognizes, but also actively supports the development of these potentials, enabling young people to achieve outstanding results and contribute to society in the most positive possible way” , said Katarina Vučković, Department of work with young people at the Institute for Youth Development KULT.

Together we can build a society that appreciates and celebrates different talents, ideas and creativity if we support, develop and provide opportunities for future children and young people to achieve the greatest possible success.
