Young and educated people are leaving Bosnian-Podrinje Canton Goražde

In the area of the Bosnian-Podrinje Canton (BPK) Goražde, a trend of young and educated staff leaving the Canton has been recorded this year.

According to the data of the Cantonal Employment Service, in the period January-November, a slightly higher number of deregistrations was recorded, due to moving to another city or canton within Bosnia and Herzegovina or due to leaving its borders.

“According to our data, 40 people deregistered due to relocation to other municipalities and cities, 95 people deregistered due to employment in other cities or municipalities, while 23 persons deregistered due to employment abroad,” said the director of the BPK Goražde Employment Service. Aida Bezdrob.

She emphasized that, according to the records, people of different professions are leaving.

When it comes to the education of those who left our canton and went abroad to work, we cannot say with certainty that it is an outflow of one or several specific occupations, but we can certainly point out that the people with secondary education – production workers of different occupations and drivers of motor vehicles are mostly leaving our Canton“, she emphasized.

Given the general trend of citizens leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina and thus the BPK Goražde, she thinks that institutions should take appropriate measures that will at least minimize this phenomenon.

We are witnessing that citizens generally leave our country and go abroad, especially young and professional staff. According to our data in the BPK Goražde, the situation is not so alarming yet. However, I think that it has been a long time since all relevant institutions in our canton should do everything in their power to improve the current situation and the departure of young and educated people is as low as possible,” said Bezdrob.

She emphasized that in that sense, the Employment Service in 2022 plans to implement a vocational training program for persons with higher education who are on the register.

In cooperation with the Government of the BPK Goražde and the Federal Employment Bureau, we are working to find ways and financial means so that this project includes all persons with a university degree who have not had the opportunity to gain work experience. This will be our first step in order to contribute to the fact that as many young and professional people get the opportunity to gain work experience and thus become more competitive in the labor market,” said the director of the Employment Service of BPK Goražde.

There are currently 3,147 persons on the records of the Service, of which 260 with a university degree, 860 with a high school diploma, 963 with a high school diploma and 1,027 with a high school diploma. The most numerous with a university degree are economists, mechanical engineers and lawyers.

The Chamber of Commerce of BPK Goražde emphasizes that one of the biggest problems in this canton is the age structure of the population and notes that every time one person leaves, for employment or leaving the canton, it is felt significantly.

In the last few years, a silent change of generations has been evident in the BPK. The number of people over 65 who “carried” the economy and development of this area is growing, while the number of people aged 16 to 65, i.e., the working age population, is decreasing, and the number of children is decreasing, which is why the natural increase is negative. Young people coming from the education process are not competitive enough in the labor market to replace those ending their working lives, making it difficult to find employment. Currently, BPK Goražde employs about 7,600 people, of which more than 50 percent are in the real sector“, said the President of the BPK Chamber of Commerce Dževad Terović.
