USAID launches new project to support the energy sector in BiH

The United States government officially launched a new project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Sunday called the Energy Sector Assistance Project (USAID/EPA) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Anadolu reports.

This five-year project, worth 9.9 million USD, continues the work of the previous USAID/EPA project, which ended in September 2024, with the aim of strengthening Bosnia and Herzegovina’s energy security and transition to clean energy.

– Over the next five years, we want to work on further strengthening energy security, integrating BiH into the broader European and global energy frameworks, and continuing to stimulate the country’s economic growth. Together, we can create a future in which energy not only powers our homes and industries, but also contributes to progress, security, and sustainability for generations to come – said Emily Coffman Krunić, USAID Mission Director.

Through this new project, USAID will collaborate and foster open dialogue with decision-makers, energy leaders, the private sector, NGOs, the media, and citizens to implement key reforms needed to build a more resilient, diversified, and sustainable energy system. These changes will provide businesses and households with a better system, while the transition to renewable energy will further improve air quality and public health, create new opportunities for local economic development, and create new jobs in the renewable energy sector.

The project activities also include supporting BiH in adopting a National Energy and Climate Plan, as well as state-level legislation that will enable the country to become part of the regional and European energy market. The project also encourages private sector investment in clean energy, improves energy efficiency, increases the use of renewable energy sources and electric vehicles, and supports the development of the Southern Interconnection for natural gas with the aim of diversifying BiH’s energy sources and increasing energy security.

The new USAID project is a continuation of the almost thirty-year partnership of the US government with BiH, aimed at developing a safer and more advanced energy sector, environmental protection and strengthening the economy.
