While waiting for the authorities to take on their responsibilities and obligations, the residents of Donja Jablanica organized a work action this weekend instead of a protest.
Experts have warned and locals have rolled up their sleeves. While authorities are not taking the warnings about a possible repeat of the Donja Jablanica scenario too seriously, residents still do not want to be left at the mercy of nature. The stream channels that run through the village are still filled with various materials, and instead of machines, locals are cleaning them manually with shovels, writes Federalna.ba.
THE AUTHORITIES ARE NOT DOING THEIR JOB
“All those who are in charge and are not doing their job – today we decided to take that responsibility into our own hands and start cleaning the canals and all the culverts that were clogged before this, and are now completely clogged. They are also endangering our few remaining houses ,” said Ćamila Imamović.
They say that instead of a protest gathering this Sunday, they decided to gather, but it is useful. However, they are not sure how much the locals can achieve on their own, but they say that it is high time something was done.
“I can’t say anything until we finish, I think whatever is done will be seen ,” says Bakir Tufek, president of the Ministry of Health of Donja Jablanica.
Himzo Begović remembers that in the place they were cleaning, there was a large culvert where people could stand. But now the bed of that stream, like all the others in the village of Donja Jablanica, is completely covered. Experts warn that flooding is possible in the winter if it is not repaired.
“Let’s just try to give ourselves some hope, people some security. We will do this culvert as much as we can because it collects a lot of water from these sides whenever it rains. We have to do it, we have no other choice ,” adds Aziz Mušanović.
And there is none, because months of warnings, protests, blockades and banners have not borne fruit. And while everyone gives up on this place, the locals say they won’t.
As much as possible, they say, these actions will ensure those who stayed and who are planning to return.
