The first counter for bicycles in Sarajevo was installed

Sarajevo got its first bicycle counter, installed by the Olympic pool on the Island, as part of the activities started last month during the European Mobility Week. This installation aims to promote sustainable forms of transport and encourage the use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly means of transport.

The installation of counters is financed by the Federal Republic of Germany through the ProSUMP project of the Open Regional Fund for Southeast Europe – Energy, Transport and Climate Protection, which is implemented by The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, in cooperation with the Ministry of Transport of Sarajevo Canton and the City of Sarajevo. The bike counter will record the number of cyclists riding on the bike path, providing valuable data for future infrastructure planning according to the real needs of citizens. electric vehicles, along the pedestrian zone and the promenade along the river Miljacka. This pilot project is part of the activities defined in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Sarajevo Canton (SUMP), the development of which was supported by GIZ. The changes that are taking place at the level of the Canton of Sarajevo, which concern sustainable traffic, are aligned with this strategic document that lays the foundations for the long-term improvement of the quality of life through sustainable traffic solutions.

– In the coming years, the Ministry of Transport, in cooperation with the city and municipalities, will significantly work on improving the cycling infrastructure. Our cooperation and implementation of planned projects related to urban mobility is of great importance for all our citizens – stated the Minister of Damage.

The mayor of Sarajevo, Benjamina Karić, emphasized the importance of this project as part of wider efforts towards a more sustainable future of Sarajevo: – The installation of the first bicycle counter in Sarajevo represents a significant step towards sustainable mobility and the promotion of bicycle traffic in our city and symbolizes our commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable city. Our goal is to build a Sarajevo where mobility will be synonymous with health, safety and sustainability, making it a better place for everyone to live, said Mayor Karić.

By installing counters, the awareness of the importance of bicycle traffic as a key element of sustainable mobility is increased. Milenka Mila Knežević from GIZ added: “The location of Otok was chosen to set up the first counter in order to determine the actual state of bicycle use as a means of transport for travel/transportation for business purposes, thus obtaining clear parameters that enable further sustainable planning of the city facing towards the person and not the car, all with the aim of reducing emissions from transport.”
Through the record of the number of cyclists, it contributes to raising awareness and encouraging the citizens of Sarajevo to increasingly choose bicycles as a means of transportation, thereby reducing traffic jams and the level of pollution in the city, which is often one of the most polluted cities in the region.
