The consequences of floods in FBiH alarmed the construction sector in the region – What needs to be changed?

The consequences of floods and landslides in municipalities in the Federation have also alarmed the construction sector. Destroyed roads and railways are a clear indication of weakness. Due to the impact of climate change, the scenario that shook the region could become an increasingly frequent picture, experts warn. They recommend – it is necessary to change the materials, the construction method, and to keep up with technology.

The extreme effects of climate change are becoming everyday in modern society. The floods that hit HNK took away human victims, but also completely devastated the road infrastructure. Experts urge that it is necessary to reduce the risk and actively work on the prevention of potential disasters.

– In these times, we can see in all the floods that have followed us since 2014 and to this day, how important it is to us to protect the environment, as well as the rational use of natural resources – pointed out Đorđe Stojić from the Association of Civil Engineers Most.

In addition to materials, it is necessary to change the habits of life and construction. Serbia is already working on redirecting towards safer ecological features of construction. Instead of natural materials, they introduce alternative ones.

–  In our industry, we have a large generation of ash, slag, and these are all materials that can replace gravel, sand, and quarry . We have to understand that the time of exploitation of the quarry is over, we have to find a way to put the scraped asphalt back into use. How can we reuse something before we throw it away – adds Siniša Mitrović from the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

And the example of Serbia is followed by Republika Srpska.  The focus is safer and better construction, but also the rehabilitation of already existing road infrastructure.

– We have three large rehabilitations where we applied these technologies, namely Romanija, Banjaluka, Gradiška. We are currently working on a project in Semberija – adds Mladen Dakić, director of JP Putevi Republika Srpska.

The Minister of Transport and Communications of Republika Srpska Nedeljko Čubrilović states that technology advances at an incredible speed, and that it is necessary for experts to be familiar with these technologies.

The application of new knowledge, materials, and technologies is a key prerequisite in preventing and reducing the risk of all potential natural disasters, which are already inevitable consequences of climate change, is the message of construction experts.
