Solar energy in BiH: How to make money from your own roof?

Bosnia and Herzegovina has undeniable advantages when it comes to the development of solar energy.

It is no secret that Bosnia and Herzegovina has a huge potential for the production of solar energy, but it has not yet been fully utilized in our country. There are no official estimates of the available potential, but experts point out that the capacities are far greater than the currently realized projects.

Shopping centers, industrial plants, warehouses and other large buildings are increasingly using the advantages of solar energy in order to reduce electricity costs, but also to contribute to the preservation of the environment. Investing in solar power plants is becoming an increasingly attractive business opportunity, and numerous examples from the region show that the return on investment can be extremely fast, especially with increasingly available technologies and favorable credit lines for renewable energy sources. Such an approach not only increases the energy independence of the company, but also contributes to the overall stability of the energy system.

However, systematically collected data on total installed capacity and potential are still not publicly available.

National goals by 2030.

According to the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) of BiH, by 2030, the following are planned: • 900 MW of large photovoltaic power plants, • 92 MW of industrial solar systems, • 500 MW of small systems for consumer-producers, known as prosumers.

While the development of large solar power plants is proceeding according to plan, and industrial systems are already exceeding the set goals, prosumers – small plants for their own consumption – are lagging far behind.

What slows down prosumer development?

The main challenge lies in the unfinished regulations. Although the technical possibilities of connecting these systems to the low-voltage grid have already been proven possible – up to 500 MW without major interventions – the development of key secondary legislation is more than a year late.

Interestingly, a comparison with Montenegro, which has a quarter of electricity consumption compared to Bosnia and Herzegovina, shows that more than 7,000 prosumers with a total power of more than 70 MW have already been connected to their system – and without significant obstacles.

Solar turn time

Bosnia and Herzegovina has undeniable advantages when it comes to the development of solar energy. Solar potential, technical support and the experiences of other countries clearly show that BiH can significantly improve its energy independence and contribute to the fight against climate change.

The development of prosumer systems represents not only an energy, but also a financial opportunity for citizens and companies. Maybe right now is the right time to think about solar solutions – for your home or business.

Join the global trend of using renewable energy sources and become part of the change. The sun is on your side – let’s harness it together!
