Snow caused chaos throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina: blocked roads, stuck vehicles and trees on the roads

Bosnia and Herzegovina was hit by intense snowfall today, which caused real chaos on the roads throughout the country. The snow that has been falling continuously since the afternoon, along with strong wind and colder temperatures, makes traffic difficult, especially on mountain passes and in higher areas.

On the highway Čelinac – Kotor Varoš (Crna Rijeka), the road is blocked due to trees fallen under the weight of snow and wind. Trucks and buses are at a standstill, while smaller vehicles occasionally slip through. On this road, in the town of Zeleni Vir, there was a traffic accident, which further complicated the situation. The investigation is ongoing, and the crowds are big.

On the road Olovo – Tuzla, traffic on this section is moving slowly, in one lane, due to a breakdown of a cargo vehicle.

In the area of Romania, the condition of the roads is extremely difficult. Trucks that have not been stopped by the police mostly block traffic, while a large number of cars are stuck. The traffic is difficult, at a speed of no more than 30 km/h, and the road conditions are extremely unfavorable.

On the section Vlasenica – Han Pijesak (Han Pogled), traffic was completely suspended due to a snowstorm and fallen trees. The road service is on the ground, but intense rainfall is slowing down the removal of obstacles from the roadway.

On Manjača, a bulldozer ran off the road while cleaning the road. For now, it is not known whether there were any injured persons in this incident.

Sudden change

Weather problems caused a collapse in Banja Luka as well. After a warm day with temperatures up to 18°C, the sudden change and intense rainfall caused numerous problems.

On the section from “Zero” towards Koli, a light pole fell onto the road. Fortunately, according to the first information, there were no injuries.

The Bosnia and Herzegovina Auto-Motorcycle Club (BIHAMK) informed the public that all mountain passes are under snow, and the most critical sections are in the central and eastern parts of the country. Trucks with trailers and tow trucks are temporarily prohibited from driving at certain crossings to prevent additional traffic jams.

BIHAMK especially warns drivers not to set off without winter equipment and to adjust their speed to road conditions. A large number of trucks are parked on the mountain roads, which makes it even more difficult to pass, while the road services are working to clear them and ensure passability.

From the operations center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton, it was confirmed that an increased number of traffic accidents were recorded, but luckily no injuries were reported. Major problems are also noted in urban areas due to the poor passability of roads. The RAD road service hired dozens of sweepers to clean the main roads.

Appeal to responsible behavior

The snowfall that surprised many drivers showed how important it is to adhere to winter equipment and rules. Road services are making maximum efforts to prepare the main sections, but appeal for patience and extra caution from all road users.

It should be remembered that, in addition to adequate winter equipment, it is crucial to maintain a safe distance and avoid risky overtaking in order to prevent additional incidents in these difficult conditions.
