“Romani Lil”: “Dictionary of the Romani language” presented in Sarajevo

In Sarajevo today, August 9 , the Dictionary of the Romani language  or  Romani Lil  , prepared by students of faculties in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was presented  , and it is a project of the “Humanity in Action” organization.

This dictionary is intended for a basic introduction to the Romani language, and Božica Mlađenović, Ejub Hodžić, Maja Lukić and Sreten Milutinović, students of faculties in Sarajevo, Banja Luka and Foča, participated in the program “Encouraging democratic values and active citizenship among young people”  .

“This project is important, because we decided to dedicate ourselves to the Roma as the largest national minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, because they face various problems such as discrimination, unemployment, lack of health insurance, social assistance… We wanted to use this vocabulary to actually bring  inclusion  them in society, or rather, at least let’s try”, said Mlađenović.

She added that in Bosnia and Herzegovina languages translated three words for each letter, while at the end there are a couple of basic phrases. The dictionary will be available online in PDF format.

An online campaign is underway, which has been going on for a month, within which there is an Instagram page  “Word by word, dictionary”  where words with translation and explanation are published.

“Due to the lack of information and lack, we decided on this project. So, this is just a mini-dictionary, although there are already a couple of publications, but this  project is being done by students  who have decided to help the Roma, as the largest national minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with their small steps,” Mlađenović added.

Ejub Hodžić, a participant in the “Dictionary of the Roma language” project, believes that this could encourage other people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to become better acquainted with the Roma, their language and culture.

“I would like to say that currently the Roma in BiH are quite uninformed, many Roma children do not go to school, where they should achieve that as many children as possible go to school,” said Hodžić.
