The project ” BRAT – Balkan route: reception in transit ” deals with the migration process in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). BRAT is a three-year initiative proposed by IPSIA (the leading project partner) in partnership with Caritas Italy and the Italian Red Cross, and with the involvement of local partners: EMMAUS, Caritas BiH and the Red Cross Society BiH.

The BRAT project aims to influence the political, cultural and operational level, in order to contribute to the facilitation of the migration process in BiH, which is managed better, safer and more responsibly. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is necessary to introduce new policies, new stories and new structures in order to make the management of migration flows more sustainable, effective and more in line with international standards.
To achieve this goal, a multi-level and multi-sectoral strategy is proposed that includes the use of different tools:
• At the operational level:  improving conditions inside transit camps (strengthening psychosocial services in the TRC) and strengthening protective measures for those forced to live outside the camps (providing basic health services) .
• Political level and training level:  through advocacy activities and through training courses (training and study visits), the BRAT project seeks to increase the skills of national and local stakeholders in charge of managing the phenomenon of migration, as well as by introducing new decision-making strategies that better respond to the challenges that this type of migration sets in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

• At the cultural level and the level of public opinion:  the BRAT project seeks to increase opportunities for acquaintance between local communities in BiH and migrant communities through various meetings; will improve the narrative regarding migration phenomena with a special awareness campaign; and finally, it will also support host communities through public interventions that make the Bosnia and Herzegovina space more inclusive.

The impact of the BRAT project will be an opportunity for BiH to establish more effective migration policies, in accordance with international standards; achieving appropriate competencies at the institutional and non-governmental level for sustainable mid- and long-term migration management; have local public opinion more sensitive to the needs of the target group; and the establishment of community-based services that can better respond to the needs of the migrant population, especially the most vulnerable among them.
Donor: AICS – Italian Agency for Development Cooperation  – is one of the key innovations established by the Italian Law on International Cooperation (Law No. 125/2014). The agency started its work in January 2016, with the aim of bringing Italy closer to its main European and global partners in the development process. Its basic model reflects that used in the main European countries and must meet the demands for more professional and innovative forms of cooperation, including the methodological flexibility required in a constantly evolving environment.
