The decision to cancel the building permit was made due to the fact that the permit had not previously passed the required environmental impact assessment.
The Croatian Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and State Property canceled the building permit for the construction of the small hydroelectric power plant Una-mlin, which was originally issued in 2016. In addition, the decisions from 2018 related to the change of the investor’s name, as well as the decision from 2019 on extending the validity of the permit issued by Zadar County, were annulled.
The decision to cancel the construction permit was made due to the fact that the permit did not previously pass the required environmental impact assessment, which is now the subject of criminal and misdemeanor proceedings. This step by the Ministry raises important questions about nature protection and environmental standards in the process of building hydroelectric power plants, especially in sensitive locations such as the source of the Una River.
The Una-Mlin hydroelectric power plant was planned to be built at the source of the Una River, but considering that the project was not in accordance with environmental legislation, the Ministry decided to take measures to protect the environment. The criminal proceedings that follow also indicate the seriousness of the situation and the need for greater responsibility in the process of issuing building permits.
