Mathematician Vuk Janković brought new gold to Trebinje

Vuk Janković, a student of the first grade of the “Jovan Dučić” grammar school in Trebinje, returned from the recently held International Mathematical Olympiad, which was held in the United Kingdom, with the highest honor.

Winning a gold medal at this prestigious competition gains even more significance if we know that Bosnia and Herzegovina has never won a gold medal from this competition before.

Vuk himself admits that he was shocked by the result achieved, especially considering that he was one of the younger competitors, and that all competitors solve the same tests.

In addition to Vuk Janković, at this year’s IMO (International Mathematical Olympiad), two more competitors from Bosnia and Herzegovina won the gold medal, which brings them 13th place in the overall ranking and the best ranking so far.

At the 65th Mathematical Olympiad held in the United Kingdom, Vuk Janković from Trebinje recorded an admirable result.

“I would say that this is an absolutely shocking result, even though I was at this same competition last year and won a bronze medal. One such award, gold at the most prestigious science Olympiad on the planet, is still something I could not even dream of, not now, not two years ago, not ever. We all know what we did, and whether it all settled down is questionable,” says the talented Vuk for BN television.

The competition system itself is extremely demanding, especially bearing in mind that all participants, regardless of age, take the same tests, points out Vuk Janković.

“609 participants from 108 countries competed, each country has the right to send 6 participants and everyone takes the same test regardless of age or background, so it is extremely inconvenient, especially for younger students, and I was probably among the younger ones at the competition itself .

The format of the competition is two days, through two different tests, three tasks each for four and a half hours and the tasks are ordered by difficulty. You get a test, you have 4 and a half hours to write what you want on the paper, after the end you hand in the paper and the committee scores your solutions, then everything is ranked and the medals are viewed”, says Vuk Janković for our television.

His love for numbers and natural sciences was born in his early childhood, says the talented Trebinjac, adding that his curiosity stands out most through the natural sciences.

“That’s what he said to me, I would, it came naturally and spontaneously, I loved numbers from a young age, I fell in love with natural sciences during elementary school and I also find physics quite interesting.

I think that through the natural sciences, my curiosity stands out the most, which I value a lot as my own trait, and mathematics is, in a way, the purest form of curiosity that you can practice,” Janković said.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has never before won a gold medal at the Mathematical Olympiad, and in addition to Vuk Janković, the gold medals in the Bosnia and Herzegovina team this year were won by Benjamin Mujkić, a 3rd grade student at the Second High School in Sarajevo, and Andrej Krčmar, a 2nd grade student at the Banja Luka Gymnasium. .

What is especially pleasing about Vuk is his age and dedication to natural sciences, so there is no doubt that this young genius from southern Srpska will continue to achieve great results in mathematics and physics in the future.
