In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the problem of lack of certified sign language interpreters

The right to communication and language equality is one of the messages highlighted on the International Day of Sign Languages. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, according to estimates, around 40,000 people have hearing loss. One of the problems they face is the lack of certified sign language interpreters, of which there are 16 in our country.

Learning sign language is not regulated by BiH. educational systems, although positive examples have also been recorded, on the initiative of the teacher – when the whole class would learn sign language. However, such examples are rare.

According to the World Federation of the Deaf, there are more than 70 million deaf people in the world. Today, hearing impaired people use more than 300 different sign languages to help them communicate.

By applying sign language, deaf and hard of hearing people would have better access to education, healthcare and social protection. That’s one of the messages highlighted on International Sign Language Day.
