From idea to flowering in Katkus Shop

You know the thing when  you combine two great loves and turn them into a business?  This is exactly how Katkus Shop was born  – a place where plants and creativity take on a completely new dimension , founded by  Aida Nikšić .  In 2021, Aida decided to combine her passion for plants and marketing, and the result is  a small world of hand-painted pots  that won the hearts of many. This story is not only about business success, but also  about courage, persistence and the beauty of the details.  In this interview, find out how it all started, what challenges Aida faced, and how she  created a brand from an idea  known for its creativity and personalized approach.

How did the story with Katkus shop begin? What sets your products apart?

The story begins in 2021, when I combined  my two great loves – plants and marketing , especially the one focused on small businesses and social networks. From this, the concept of hand-painted plant pots was born, and since I love all things “mini”, the choice of small cacti and pots was logical.

I’m not an artist, nor did I have any experience in that field,  but I believed there was a charm in starting from scratch.

I focused on  marketing that would support it.  What stood out to me from the beginning was the idea, which was  new and fresh on our market, and the attention to detail  – from packaging to small accessories for each customer, such as cards with instructions, chocolate bars, stickers and the like. Today, in addition to the fun packaging, our products are also recognizable by  cute drawings  on the pots, which makes them special.

As a student, you balanced full-time work and the development of Katkus Shop. Do you think you chose the right moment to start, or would it be better if you waited? Is there even an ideal time to start a business?

I don’t think there is an “ideal time” to start , but I don’t regret a second that I started it when I did. Katkus Shop  grew at a pace that was perfect for me  – without sudden jumps that would cause too much stress. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do my best in juggling large clients and a large number of orders, but I went gradually. As I studied and put in the effort, so did the business. My idea about Katkus Shop  has been brewing for years, but until you start working, the plans remain just a theory.

If you believe in your idea and have a basic plan, every moment is ideal.

Moving from Instagram to the physical space was a big turning point for your business. How did it come about and what was the process like?

The turning point happened when my boyfriend, Belmin Islam , a photographer and graphic designer,  joined the team  . His professional and branded visuals  raised our small business to a higher level , which changed people’s perception of the brand. I realized that I could no longer balance two jobs – working from 8 to 4 and working at the Katkus shop after that. With the great support of Belmin and the family, I decided to take that  big step  and devote myself completely to my business. Opening a physical store  has allowed us to expand our offer  to much more than painted pots and cacti – we now have  a wider variety of products, we represent other artisans, we offer plant-related services and organize workshops.

Exactly what you just said is one of the indicators of how much you invest in your business and look at the long term. You don’t just stop at selling plants, you also started workshops. What can participants expect?

Our workshops are  fun and relaxing, a combination of creativity, relaxation and learning.  In an informal atmosphere, with wine and snacks,  participants paint clay pots  with my help and advice, letting their imaginations run wild.  We get to know each other and the proper maintenance of plants , the signs they send us, watering, propagation  and much more.  Our goal is for every participant to go home with  new knowledge and a smile.

In addition to shops and workshops, you also provide beautification and plant maintenance services in business premises. How did you come up with that idea and how much importance do companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina attach to the environment in which their employees work? Do you have a nice example to share?

The first cooperation in this field was with Tacta doo, which invited me to refresh the plants in their area in Unitica. I have noticed that  plants in business premises often look “sad”  because they are not properly maintained, so I am glad to  cooperate with companies that care about preserving plants , instead of simply replacing them with new ones. Also,  it has been scientifically proven that plants affect our mood, especially in places where more people work constantly on computers.  They  bring freshness, improve air quality and contribute to better working conditions.  I hope that more and more companies will recognize the importance of this aspect.

Katkus shop contributes to the local community by supporting artists and selling their handicrafts. Do you think that such and similar individual initiatives at the micro level are important and can initiate changes in society?

I am proud of our “concept store” section, where  local and regional artists display their handicrafts.  We have  a permanent display of small brands , but in the future we plan to allow everyone to exhibit their works for a certain period. I know how much it would have meant to me three years ago if someone wanted to present and sell my work, so I believe that it means a lot to other craftspeople as well.  I cooperate with brands of which I myself am a customer , which enables their clients to see live and choose products that they normally order online from Tuzla, Belgrade, Doboj, etc. I believe that such  micro-level initiatives have the potential to initiate broader changes  in society.

What would you say to Aida from the period when she was just starting her entrepreneurial journey? What is the most valuable advice that would help you then?

I would probably advise her  to commit to this full time sooner and stop being so skeptical.  Today, that advice still helps me, especially when it comes to accepting help when the orders are overwhelming.

What are the future plans for the Katkus shop? Are you planning to expand your business?

Although we are currently adjusting to the last big step – opening the store,  we are already working on several projects for 2025.  Expanding the business is a natural goal and I believe that  exciting times are yet to come for Katkus shop , so stay tuned!

Which book, movie or series would you recommend to our members, when they need a break from work and everyday duties?

I think that the series “Black Mirror” should be reviewed by everyone, because I have the feeling that  it is becoming a part of our reality more and more quickly.  I also recommend the book “The Power of the Present Moment”, it is ideal for those who are looking for  a different perspective of thinking , rather than a classic novel. As for movies, “Bullet Train” is the last one that left a strong impression on me.

With  love for details and passion for creation , Katkus Shop is a place that wins the hearts of everyone who wants to  give their home or business space a special charm and personal touch.  If  the story about Katkus Shop excited you , follow their  Instagram  and  Facebook  profiles and follow all the news.
