The topic of creativity in leadership is complex, but incredibly important. In previous posts, I wrote about leadership, leaders and female leaders, as well as my experiences and the path to becoming a young leader. However, creativity in leadership deserves a special place because in today’s world, without innovative approaches, one cannot get far. That’s why I decided to share tips and examples through this post on how to develop creativity that can help in your leadership.
INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY AS THE BASIS OF LEADERSHIP
When you work with young people or lead a project, it is always crucial to have fresh ideas and innovative approaches . If you do things the same way as before, you cannot expect different results. Tapping in place only leads to stagnation, and that is not something that young leaders should aspire to. Innovativeness is important for several reasons, but perhaps the most important is that you attract and keep the attention of those you work with – whether they are peers, colleagues, or team members.
ARE YOU GIVING YOUNG PEOPLE WHAT INSPIRES THEM?
When you work with young people, you have to constantly offer them something new, something that will attract and inspire them . For example, organizing a classic workshop or lecture may not generate enthusiasm, but if you include interactive games, debates, or quizzes, there is a greater chance that everyone will participate. It is important to think about the interests of the group you are working with and include activities that engage them. If you are a team leader or project organizer, think about how you can use creative approaches and adapt to the needs and interests of your members.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
One of the most important pieces of advice I can give young leaders is to think outside the box .
For example, if you are tasked with leading a team through a specific project, try to find methods that are not often used. Maybe instead of classic meetings, you can organize brainstorming sessions in a relaxed atmosphere – outdoors, in a cafe, or even online, with visual maps or applications that encourage creative thinking.
TIP: BE OPEN OR OPEN TO CHANGE
Creativity in leadership requires openness to change. Many leaders make the mistake of thinking that if one method has proven successful, there is no need to change it. But young leaders who want to succeed must be flexible and ready to adapt their approaches.
For example, if you notice that your team is not motivated or facing challenges, try to change tactics. You can organize a “day of creativity” where each member suggests new ideas to improve the team’s work.
BE AN EXAMPLE OF INNOVATION
If you want your team to be creative, you have to set an example for them. In your daily tasks and interactions, show that you are open to new ideas and appreciate creative suggestions.
For example, propose team challenges where everyone works on a joint project and proposes solutions in creative ways. If a leader shows initiative and innovation themselves, the team is more likely to follow suit.
ADVICE: FOLLOW THE EXAMPLES OF OTHER LEADERS
Creativity is often developed through inspiration and watching others solve challenges. Don’t be afraid to learn from other leaders. Study examples of innovative approaches – how some leaders solved problems in a creative way, how they motivated their teams or introduced new work methods. Often, even small changes can have a big impact on the way a team functions.
PRACTICAL EXAMPLES FOR CREATIVE LEADERSHIP
Here are some simple examples that you can apply in your leadership:
1. Team brainstorming – Set aside time each week for brainstorming where each member can propose ideas to improve the team’s work.
2. “What if” meetings – These meetings may seem like a game, but they actually help develop creative thinking. At every meeting, ask the question “What if…” and encourage members to think outside the box.
3. Incorporating Technology – There are many digital tools that can facilitate creative thinking. For example, using platforms such as idea mapping or task visualization can make planning more interesting.
4. Reversing roles – Sometimes you can split roles in a team so that team members lead certain meetings or take on leadership tasks. In this way, they get a chance to show their ideas and maybe suggest creative changes.
5. Creativity Day – Once a month you can organize a day when everyone in the team shares their suggestions and ideas for projects that do not have strictly defined goals. This can encourage the creation of new projects and boost motivation.
CREATIVITY IS THE KEY TO GROWTH
Ultimately, creativity in leadership is not just a skill, but a mindset. Through innovative approaches, openness to new ideas and flexibility, leaders can create an environment where everyone feels free to contribute their ideas. If you’re a young leader, my advice is to keep exploring new approaches, follow examples and don’t be afraid of change – because that’s the only way you can grow, both you and your team .
