At the end of last week, waste accumulated near the dam after the floods that hit the municipalities of Jablanica and Konjic in early October was cleaned from the Grabovica Hydroelectric Power Plant reservoir. A total of 8,300 m3 was removed, which is significantly more than all previously due quantities that ranged from 100 to 1,000 m3 annually. By sorting the waste, which was disposed of adequately, it was determined that PVC makes up about 5%, while the remaining 95% is waste of organic origin.
After the floods, the Hydroelectric Power Plants on the Neretva River immediately after the road communication was established, within their capabilities, by engaging the human and technical resources of the Electric Power Industry of BiH, collected about 4000 m3, of which 500 m3 from the accumulation of the Salakovac HPP. Under the jurisdiction of the Adriatic Sea Water Area Agency and with the help of the funds and employees of the Electric Power Industry of BiH, an additional 4300 m3 were removed. Given the enormous quantities and the emergency situation, the Federal Water Inspectorate, the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina through the relevant ministries and the Ministry of Tourism and Environmental Protection of the HNK also joined in solving the problem.
The Adriatic Basin Water Area Agency will also carry out cleaning work along the Jablanica HPP dam, which is currently significantly difficult given the low level of the reservoir.
Despite a significant number of institutions that expressed interest in providing assistance in waste removal, only the Everwave organization from Germany sent one cleaning boat to assist towards the very end of the process, which did not play a significant role given its capacity and method of operation.
Under normal circumstances, the Neretva Hydropower Plants fulfill their obligation to remove floating waste directly next to the dams without any problems, with the engagement of their own special boat for collecting debris and an external contractor with a special crane and trucks for transporting waste to the landfill.
