Championship titles and medals are not enough, the women’s European handball club is shutting down

Vipers won the Champions League three times in a row in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

During the past week, the European Handball Federation has been following the information and has been in contact with the Norwegian club Vipers Kristiansand regarding its financial situation.

“Following the announcement on Sunday evening (October 20), it is with regret that the EHF confirms the club’s decision to file for bankruptcy, and we hope that in that process the best possible solution for the future of the players and affected staff and club employees can be found.” ,  says the EHF statement.

Vipers have also announced that they will stop competing in the Norwegian league, as well as the Champions League, after the club’s management decided to declare bankruptcy.

CHAMPION FOR THREE YEARS IN A ROW

The Norwegian media reports that Vipers’ results in all competitions will most likely be annulled.

“We did everything we could to preserve the club. However, the Board of Directors has come to the conclusion that there is no reason for the club to continue operating,”  Vipers president Peter Gitmark said.

Vipers won the Champions League three times in a row in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

“At the same time, the EHF respects the openness with which Vipers Kristiansand has informed the EHF of its situation over the past week. Vipers Kristiansand have been registered and accepted into the EHF Women’s Champions League 2024/25 after submitting all the necessary documents which included a statement of the club’s financial situation confirmed by the Norwegian Handball Association. The European Handball Federation will discuss the effects of the situation on the EHF Women’s Champions League with all relevant stakeholder groups. Any decision will be communicated in time and before the weekend of 9/10. November when the EHF Women’s Champions League resumes after a three-week break.” , it is stated in the press release of the EHF.
