Mediacentar Sarajevo invites male and female students of journalism, journalists and editors to apply for a series of webinars on recognizing and combating hate speech in the media in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The program includes three webinars on recognizing hate speech, reporting on topics and statements that contain or may incite hate speech, and on the regulation of hate speech in the online media comment sections. A certificate of participation will be awarded to those who attend all three webinars. The number of places is limited.
The first webinar
June 28, 2021: 14:00 –15: 30: How to recognize hate speech?
Trainer: Vesna Alaburić, media lawyer
Participants will gain knowledge about definitions and forms of hate speech, the legal and regulatory framework, and court practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina and EU countries. For example, through exercises and discussion, participants will learn to recognize hate speech and distinguish it from insults and abusive speech.

The second webinar
July 6, 2021. 14:00 – 15:30: How to deal with the hate speech of interviewees and hateful narratives in reporting?
Trainer: Marija Ristić, Regional Director of the Balkan Research Network
Participants will learn how to deal with statements of interviewees that contain hate speech and hate narratives, as well as on topics that may incite hatred towards others. They will receive recommendations on how to convey such statements and report in a way that will not further incite hatred. Through examples and discussion, the webinar will discuss the impact of such narratives on the public, especially in transition societies and societies that have a hard time dealing with the past.
The third webinar
July 9, 2021 14:00 – 15:30: How to regulate hate speech in the comment sections?
Trainer: Ajla Obradović, digital media editor, Radio Free Europe
Participants will learn how to regulate hate speech in the comments sections on online media and social media accounts and about the best practices in media newsrooms. Participants will discuss the role of the media in combating hate speech, and learn to use tools on social media that can help regulate hate speech.
