BiH catches up with the EU and gets a National Competence Center for High Performance Computing

The Director of the Verlab Institute, Lejla Gurbeta Pokvić, spoke about the National Competence Center for High Performance Computing of Bosnia and Herzegovina and what BiH becoming part of the network will mean for domestic scientists.

“The National Competence Center for High Performance Computing (HPC) is essentially a key step towards connecting Bosnia and Herzegovina with the European technological ecosystem. This is a very important project because it allows our students, researchers, but also industry to have access to advanced computing infrastructure that has been inaccessible to them until now or was associated with great challenges, such as having to seek special ‘services’ or knowledge of people in order to gain access to the necessary computers for their research. We are now part of a network that enables the use of resources for research purposes or advanced activities in the economy within the EURO HPC network,” explains Gurbeta Pokvić.

The necessity of this lies in the fact that modeling and large-scale research require enormous computing capacities. The significance of this project for the state and science is multiple. First, it enables the transfer of knowledge and development of skills in the field of advanced technologies, which will have a direct impact on the education system.

“In addition, the industry will benefit because it will be able to use these resources to develop products and services based on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analysis and others. In addition, in a broader context, the EU is already actively considering the construction of ‘AI factories’ that rely on supercomputers, and this center can be a key element in the integration of BiH into those global initiatives. In the long run, such a center can become the basis for the development of new technologies, applications and innovations that will improve the economy and society in BiH”, said Gurbeta Pokvić.

As he points out for building innovative services, this is also a potential opportunity for deeper digitalization and transformation of the sector. Namely, companies involved in the development of software and technology services will have access to tools that allow them to create more sophisticated products, test ideas faster, and apply new technologies in real, highly demanding conditions.

“This project represents a major step forward in terms of building infrastructure that will enable the scientific and research community and industry to develop cutting-edge technologies in BiH, thus opening up numerous opportunities for competitiveness on the international stage,” said Gurbeta Pokvić.

He emphasizes that support programs for the use of high-performance computing (HPC) technologies are implemented precisely through this center.

“It enables researchers, students and industry to access advanced computing resources, providing them with the necessary infrastructure and training to work with these technologies. In this way, the center helps in the easier integration of HPC in different sectors, which encourages innovation and improves competitiveness”, concludes Gurbeta Pokvić.

This is the EUROCC4SEE project, which is directly funded by a European Union body called EURO HPC JOINT UNDERTAKING.
