Banja Luka kebab is now a protected brand

The Association for the Preservation of the Guaranteed Tradition of the Banja Luka ćevap specialty was granted a decision for the registration of the guaranteed traditional Banja Luka ćevap specialty by the City Administration yesterday.

City manager Bojan Kresojević pointed out that a confirmation, or certificate, was handed over that Banja Luka ćevap is a protected brand from October 2, which will be of great importance for the producers of this specialty.

– This will have the potential to extend to other aspects of intellectual property and brand protection when it comes to our city – said Kresojević.

He added that this will mean that any producer who decides to call his product Banja Luka kebab will have to follow the prescribed procedure, production process, ingredients and recipe.

– All this contributes to the branding of Banja Luka. This process enables the geographical transfer of Banja Luka ćevap, and it is not only related to Banja Luka, which means that wherever you make this product in the world, you must follow the rules for its production – Kresojević pointed out,  Capital reports  Srna’s writing.

He added that in this way the recognition of Banja Luka is raised.

Dragan Brenjo, representative of the BiH Food Safety Agency, said that this mark does not mean the place of production, that is, it does not mean that kebab can only be produced in Banja Luka.

– It can be produced anywhere, but in order to be called Banja Luka, it must meet strict conditions regarding the recipe, appearance and method of preparation – explained Brenjo.

The promoter of the “Ćevap fest” event, Nebojša Kuštrinović, said that he was satisfied that the Banja Luka ćevap finally became a protected brand.

– Anyone who has been to Banja Luka and hasn’t tried Banja Luka ćevap, it’s as if they haven’t even been to Banja Luka – Kuštrinović pointed out.

He emphasized that the Banja Luka kebab consists of beef slices and that it must be accompanied by a salad, i.e. specially cut onions, noting that the Banja Luka kebab is eaten with the hands.

Duško Tešanović from the Association for the Protection of Banja Luka Kebab thanked the city and all those who helped make this happen.

At the first meeting, which was held in April 2023, organized by the representatives of the Department of Economy and Local Economic Development of the city of Banjaluka with the future founders of the Association for the Preservation of the Guaranteed Tradition of the “Banjaluka ćevapa” specialty, and representatives of the Veterinary Institute of the Republic of Srpska “Dr. Vaso Butozan” and the Faculty of Technology of the University of Banja Luka, the role of each participant was agreed upon.

In this process, it was agreed that the city will be the coordinator of activities in the process of obtaining the label of guaranteed traditional specialty food product in BiH for Banja Luka ćevap in the process before the Agency for Food Safety of BiH, including technical assistance in establishing that association before the Basic Court and financing the development of the specification of the Institute and the Technological faculty.
