Alexander Payne winner of the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo at the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival

The Honorary Heart of Sarajevo of the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival will be awarded to director, screenwriter and producer Alexander Payne in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film art.

– It is appropriate to award Alexander Payne with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, not only because he loves Sarajevo, but also because at the center of all his stories are people with big hearts. As a director who has an exceptional ability to combine humor and poignancy, he left an indelible mark on contemporary cinematography. His insightful storytelling and keen eye for human emotions continuously inspire filmmakers around the world – said Jovan Marjanović, director of the Sarajevo Film Festival.

The grandson of Greek immigrants, Alexander Payne grew up in Nebraska, USA. He studied history and Spanish literature at Stanford University and received a master’s degree in film directing from UCLA. His eight feature films have been nominated for a total of 24 Oscars, including four nominations for Best Picture and three for Best Director. He has won Best Adapted Screenplay twice, and his most recent film, The Holdovers, won Best Supporting Actress this year.

– Most importantly, I previously presented two films at the Sarajevo Film Festival, and I am delighted and honored to return – emphasized Payne, whose filmography includes the acclaimed films Citizen Ruth (1996), Election Days (1999), Mr. Schmidt (2002), Sidewalk (2004), The Heirs (2011), Nebraska (2013), Downsizing (2017) and Barton Academy (2023).

Payne’s first encounter with Sarajevo was in 2005, when he personally presented his films in the “Tribute to” program at the 11th Sarajevo Film Festival.

At the 30th Sarajevo Film Festival, Payne will hold a masterclass, a unique opportunity for film enthusiasts to learn from him about film production, directing, screenwriting and other key aspects of his career. In addition, he will present a special screening of his film Stranputica, a dramatic comedy from 2004. The film received critical acclaim, earning five Academy Award nominations and the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Payne’s longtime collaborator Jim Taylor will join him in Sarajevo, SFF reported.

Honorary Heart of Sarajevo was founded in 2005 with the aim of recognizing individuals for their exceptional contribution to the affirmation and development of the film industry and the support and development of the Sarajevo Film Festival.
