After 30 years, European deer have returned to Majevica

After 30 years, European deer returned to the area of the “Majevica” sports and recreational hunting ground, after 24 Cervus elaphus deer were settled today, which is a pioneering activity when it comes to settling deer in the territory of the Republic of Srpska.

Among the released animals are deer, hinds and fawns that were obtained from a nearby farm and passed the necessary veterinary checks.

By the way, a celebration of the beginning of this project was organized today, for which funds were provided from the budget of the Hunting Association “Majevica” Lopara and from the donation of the hunters of this association.

Goran Tasovac, president of the “Majevica” Lopara Hunting Association, said that today they are celebrating the return of the European deer, which lived on Majevica in the 1970s, but unfortunately disappeared due to the war.

As he emphasized, the hunters want to enrich Majevica with deer and expect some reproduction already in May.

“We have prepared everything so that we know their movements at any moment,” said Tasovac.

Živojin Lazić, Secretary General of the Hunting Association of Republika Srpska, said that this “pioneering” release of deer is a useful, good activity and thanked all the institutions that helped make this happen, and promised full support to the Majevica Hunting Association.

The ceremony was also attended by Petar Đokić, Minister of Energy and Mining of the Republika Srpska, who pointed out that hunters do their best to improve the environment.

He noted that the existence of deer on Majevica is being restored after 30 years and that he is happy to be present at such an important event, reports Srna.

Rado Savić, the mayor of the Lopare municipality, said that the number of people who gathered at Majevica today clearly shows the love of the people of Majevica for nature.

The return of the deer to Majevica was an initiative of the Hunting Association “Majevica” Lopara, and is being implemented with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic of Srpska, the Hunting Association and the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage.
