During the past weekend, 6 landmine survivors successfully completed the two-stage Ultra trail #RavopravnoRazličiti Bjelašnica-Jahorina in the length of 52 kilometers. The activity was initiated by the landmine survivors themselves, who wanted to remind of the negative impact of landmines in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Survivors who successfully completed the Ultra trail are: Dejan Zvizdalo from Trnovo, Mirko Zečević Tadić from Brčko, Nijaz Memić from Sarajevo, Dragan Janjić from Trebinje, Željko Volaš from Banja Luka and Jovica Goreta from Pale.
Ultra trail #RavopravnoRazličiti is a continuation of last year’s climbing action to Maglić called “Mountaineering Challenge of Landmine Survivors” which promotes the rights, capacities and potentials of landmine survivors and people with disabilities, and reminds the public and calls on competent institutions to fulfill remaining obligations from the Mine Ban Convention concerning the clearing of mined territories and the provision of support to landmine victims by 2025. The fact that the event takes place in the wider Sarajevo area is an opportunity to further recall the significant achievement of the realization of “Sarajevo without landmines” as a model that can be replicated to other mine-affected local communities in establishing a safe environment without landmines and explosive remnants of war on the entire territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Participants did not hide their satisfaction at the end of the day. Nijaz Memić, one of the participants of the Ultra trail, pointed out: “This Ultra trail was a special challenge both physically and mentally. First of all, because of the extremely demanding section we were moving on and the length, which in the end was more than 50 kilometers. In the end, I am extremely happy that I managed to complete this Ultra trail, but also due to the fact that together with the rest of the team I was the voice of all those landmine victims who are not able to be a part of these activities.”
Mirko Zečević Tadić encouraged other landmine survivors to join them in the following challenges: “I would like to encourage other landmine victims to challenge themselves and do something for their health, and to take an active part in many segments of life.”
Ultra trail #RavopravnoRazličiti is a part of the campaign within the project “Communities of different but equal citizens” funded by the European Union, and implemented by the Organization UDAS in partnership with the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Banja Luka and Association “Nešto više”.
