Balkan Green Ideas is a regional program of support for social entrepreneurs, implemented in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Mozaik Foundation with the support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The goal of the program is to provide financial and mentoring support to green ideas and businesses that will contribute to the development of local communities in a sustainable way. The three best ideas from Bosnia and Herzegovina will participate in the Balkan Green Ideas regional competition, which will be held in Sarajevo this year, organized by the Balkan Green Foundation and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.

What business ideas or businesses are we looking for?
We are looking for innovative ideas or businesses that rely on community resources to solve social problems, while protecting the environment by adhering to the principles of sustainable development. These are business ideas that we want to contribute to the community without jeopardizing resources for future generations. Sustainable development is important, that is why it is especially important for us that the idea or business contributes to the achievement of at least one of the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) :
- Goal 2. Eradicate hunger;
- Goal 7. Ensure access to reliable, sustainable and modern energy at affordable prices for all;
- Goal 8. Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full employment and decent work for all;
- Goal 11. Make cities and settlements inclusive, safe, adaptable and sustainable;
- Goal 12. Ensure sustainable forms of consumption and production;
- Goal 13. Take urgent actions in the fight against climate change and its consequences;
- Goal 15. Protect, establish and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt soil degradation, and prevent the destruction of biological diversity.
Depending on how developed it is, you can submit the idea in 2 categories:
Idea – all those who are in the early stages of development, are still testing or need to test the concept.
Business – all those who already generate income for the stated idea (they have a product or service that they sell on the market).
Individuals, individuals and informal groups can only apply for the Ideas category, while registered businesses (in any form) can apply for both categories.
These are the criteria according to which we will choose the most successful:
- the idea or business is not older than 3 years from the day the call was opened;
- the idea or business involves community employment, uses traditional knowledge and skills (eg crafts) or otherwise relies on local resources;
- the idea or business has a vision or plan for the protection and improvement of the environment, i.e. whether it is ecologically sustainable;
- the idea or business is based on a gradual growth plan, i.e. whether it is economically viable;
- the idea or business has been evaluated for the local market, including the competition;
- the idea or business is innovative compared to other businesses and ideas in the community;
- idea or business has a positive social impact.
One of last year’s winners in the projects category is our Aldina Džinić , the owner of the “Recycling PET Revolution” project , which promotes environmental protection through an innovative approach to collecting plastic packaging and supports local development. Her project encourages the active participation of citizens in recycling, spreading awareness of the importance of preserving the environment and common positive changes. $5,000 in the Idea category (2 awards)
$10,000 in the Business category (3 awards) .
