“Borak Cycling trail” promotes tourism in rural areas

On Sunday, June 27, a bicycle race titled “Borak Cycling trail” will be held, with the aim of promoting the cycling tourism of Herzegovina and its tourist capacities.

The event is organized within the project of cross-border cooperation “Cycling routes for the improvement of natural and cultural heritage of Herzegovina and Montenegro – Cycling Rural”, funded by the European Union.

This is the fourth in a series of recreational cycling rides that will be organized within the project, suitable for all ages and genders. Introduction of quality standards “Bike Friendly Concept” is planned, which will add value to the tourist offer of the entire region. This will directly contribute to the increase of activities in the rural areas of Herceg Novi and West Herzegovina Canton.

Departure is planned at 11.15 am on the plateau of Borak Park in Široki Brijeg.

The driving route starts from Borak Park in the direction of Mostarski Blato, following the course of the river Lištica.

Participants will have the opportunity to see some undiscovered beaches on the river Lištica, as well as one of the 220 species of birds that live in Mostar mud, and swim with an endemic fish species called Prikanac.

During the ride, participants will visit the medieval tombstones stećci in Provo and Gradac, a fascinating natural phenomenon – Lončar’s fields, and finally pass through the Borak canyon and enjoy the view of numerous mills. Refreshments are provided halfway through the trail. Hot meal and gift package is provided for participants upon completion of the ride.

The project “Cycling routes for the improvement of natural and cultural heritage of Herzegovina and Montenegro – Cycling Rural” is implemented within the Cross-border Cooperation Program Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2014-2020.

The project implementation started on October 1, 2019, and will last for 18 months. The total value of the project is 495,000 euros, of which the European Union is financing 400,000 euros in grants.

The project partners are the Office of the Government of the West Herzegovina Canton for European Integration as the project holder, the cities Široki Brijeg and Ljubuški, the municipalities of Posušje and Grude, and the Tourist Organization of Herceg Novi (CG).

The aim of the project is strengthening and diversifying the quality of tourism, and the development and promotion of cycling and outdoor tourist offer in rural areas of the cross-border regions of Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project will result in the creation of a new and more attractive tourist offer under the brand “Cycling Rural”, which will be included in the tourist offer of both countries, as well as in the overall tourist offer of the Adriatic hinterland, the organizers said.
